Rounding The Bases: This Week's Best MLB Betting Trends
Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball (All records and statistics through Saturday):
HOT TEAM: New York Yankees
THIS SEASON: 39-25 (5.37 units)
LAST WEEK: 6-0
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home vs. Atlanta, Road vs. New York Mets
The Yankees extended their winning streak to eight games with some extra-inning dramatics against the Washington Nationals Saturday night, getting a two-run double from Mark Teixeira in the top of the 14th to win 5-3. New York has stormed through interleague play, rolling over the Mets, Braves and Nationals thanks to a pitching staff that posted a 2.12 ERA over the past week.
COLD TEAM: Seattle Mariners
THIS SEASON: 28-39 (-4.15 units)
LAST WEEK: 1-6
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Road vs. Arizona, Road vs. San Diego
The Mariners snapped a six-game slide with a 7-4 victory over San Francisco Saturday, just their second win over a National League team during this current frame of interleague matchups. Seattle was outscored 32-16 during that six-game skid and hit just .224 BA over the past seven days. The M’s, who have never finished with a record below.500 versus the NL over the last 12 seasons, are now 5-6 against the Senior Circuit heading into two interleague road series.
OVER TEAM: Houston Astros
O/U THIS SEASON: 39-25-1
O/U LAST WEEK: 6-1
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home vs. Kansas City, Home vs. Cleveland
The Astros are quickly becoming the best over play in all of baseball, sitting behind the Mets and Phillies in the over/under count. Houston hemorrhaged runs last week, allowing 52 runners across home plate while posting a collective 7.60 ERA – worst in the majors. The Astros bats did little to help out Over backers, hitting just .209 over that span, but did manage to score 11 runs in a win over the White Sox.
UNDER TEAM: Boston Red Sox
O/U THIS SEASON: 35-29-1
O/U LAST WEEK: 1-6
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home vs. Miami, Home vs. Atlanta
Interleague action has left the BoSox’s bats frozen, managing just over three runs per game in the last seven outings. Things got so bad for the Red Sox offense, they were actually outgunned by a Cubs lineup that ranks near the basement in almost every offensive statistic. Boston was hitting .219 over the last seven days and, while those feeble bats can’t keep the Red Sox out of the AL East basement, they’ve been an ATM for Under bettors.

Head-to-head: Spain 2-1 (international friendly) 2006-06-07
About Croatia
FIFA World Ranking: No. 8
Recent results: 1-1 draw vs. Italy 2012-06-14, 3-1 win vs. Ireland 2012-06-10, 1-1 draw vs. Norway 2012-06-02
Rumors are running wild that there may be a secret pact between Croatia and Spain heading into Monday’s final contest of Group C play.
With both teams at four points, a draw of 2-2 or higher would allow Croatia and Spain to advance to the next round of the tournament at the expense of Italy. The Azzurri were dealt a similar hand at Euro 2004, when a draw between Denmark and Sweden knocked them out of contention.
"The 2-2 will be a possible score, but so is a 1-0 or a 0-1," Spain defender Raul Albiol told reporters. "We will play for the victory and so will Italy and Croatia.
"We all want to depend on ourselves and we all play to win. There is no pact and there won't be a fixed 2-2. Each team will play to win."
Croatia blasted the Irish 3-1 and played the Italians to a tough 1-1 draw. Manager Slaven Bilic says his team will need to be perfect and also take some chances if it’s going to match the firepower of the defending world and European champs.
Croatia will look to standouts Luka Modric and Mario Mandzukic to set the tone. Mandzukic is tied for the most goals in the tournament with three. Nikica Jelavic missed training Saturday with a fever but is expect to be recovered for Sunday’s final group match.
This is the first time Croatia has faced Spain in major competition.
About Spain
FIFA World Ranking: No. 1
Recent results: 4-0 win vs. Ireland 2012-06-14, 1-1 draw vs. Italy 2012-06-10, 1-0 win vs. China 2012-06-03
After a lackluster draw with Italy in the opener, Spain displayed its full arsenal of weapons on the Irish, winning 4-0 Thursday. Fernando Torres, who scored twice in that victory, is back in the starting lineup after coming off the bench in the tournament opener.
Spain manager Vicente del Bosque stirred up controversy with a striker-less attack against the Italians but unleashed his horses in the rout over Ireland, bring Cesc Fabregas off the bench in relief of Torres. He netted his second goal of the tournament in the dying minutes of Thursday’s game.
The Spaniards will be even stronger for this final group contest, welcoming Sergio Busquets back to the midfield following a minor foot injury.
Tactics and lineup
Croatia switched from a 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1 and brought midfielders Niko Kranjcar and Danijel Pranjic, and forward Eduardo in as substitutions versus Italy. Modric was pushed up the field and Mandzukic was placed to the right of the attack.
Spain abandoned its striker-less formation for a 4-3-3 attack against Ireland and it paid off with four goals. If the defending champs get a comfortable lead, expect del Bosque to sit his stars, Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres, who all have yellow cards and could run the risk of missing time if they get another booking. Fabregas is expected to come off the bench for the second straight game.

Monday's Streaking & Slumping Starting Pitchers
"STREAKING"
R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (10-1, 2.20 ERA)
When the knuckleball is working, it’s untouchable. And right now, the knuckler is working for Dickey. The Mets right-hander has won five consecutive starts and hasn’t tasted defeat since April 18 – a string of 10 starts. The team’s appeal on Dickey’s controversial one-hitter wasn’t accepted by the league but the pitcher really didn’t want a no-hitter that way. Dickey has struck out 50 batters over the past five outings.
Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants (8-2, 2.18 ERA)
Cain is coming off just 22nd perfect game in MLB history, shutting the door on the Astros this past Wednesday. He’s 7-0 in his last seven starts and hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last 16 innings of work. The righty has struck out 23 batters in that span.
"SLUMPING"
J.A. Happ, Houston Astros (4-7, 5.33 ERA)
The Astors staff was been terrible lately and Happ is one of the biggest reasons why. He’s dropped four straight starts, including serving up 12 runs in his last two outings, and lugs a 7.17 ERA over his last five efforts. Happ has given up three home runs in his last two outings and has watched 11 balls soar over the outfield fence in his last 10 appearances.
Henderson Alvarez, Toronto Blue Jays (3-6, 3.87 ERA)
The Blue Jays are running out of fingers to plug the dam with. They’ve had three starters hit the DL this week and turn to Alvarez to shoulder the load Monday. The right-hander hasn’t won since May 10, going 0-4 in his last six outings. He got rocked for three home runs versus Washington in his last start and has allowed at least one dinger in 11 of his 13 outings this season – 16 in total.

MLB Bettors Eye Over Trend with Matt Cain Following Perfection
By Jason Logan
San Francisco Giants starter Matt Cain toes the rubber for the first time since tossing the 22nd perfect game in MLB history this past Wednesday.
Cain, who stifled the Houston Astros in a 10-0 win, faces the Los Angeles Angels in interleague play Monday, riding a seven-start winning streak and a slim 2.62 career ERA versus the American League. The right-hander not only faces Albert Pujols and a dangerous L.A. lineup but he also tries to avoid the letdown which has plagued pitchers coming off no-hitters and perfect games.
Since 1999, there have been 31 no-hitters/perfect games (not including Cain's), most recently the Seattle Mariners’ collective no-hitter versus the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 8. Games involving a starting pitcher coming off one of those accomplishments have gone 19-11-1 over/under - 61 percent to the Over.
Cain’s perfect game was the seventh since 1999 and the second of the 2012 MLB season. Chicago White Sox pitcher Phillip Humber was perfect against the Seattle Mariners on April 21, 2012, but was hammered for nine runs over five innings in his following start – a 10-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox which topped the 8-run number. The six previous perfect-game pitchers have combined for a 3-2-1 over/under mark in their subsequent start.
Cain and the Giants are -108 road favorites versus the Angels Monday. The total is set at 7 runs.

Monday's Betting Tips
"Hamilton expected back with Rangers"
Weather Watch
The battle of Ohio could be a soggy one as thunderstorms roll into Cleveland. The forecast at Progressive Field is calling for 27 percent chance of rain and temperatures in the mid 80s.
Who’s HOT
MLB: New York Yankees – The Bronx Bombers needed extra innings to extend their winning streak to eight games Saturday, and picked up win No. 9 Sunday afternoon. New York welcomes Atlanta to Yankee Stadium Monday. It’s won its last five meetings with the Braves.
Euro: Spain – The defending world and Euro champs haven’t lost in seven matches, including a draw with Italy and a 4-0 win over Ireland in the first two games of the 2012 championship. Their last loss came to England, 1-0, in a friendly on Nov. 12, 2011.
Who’s NOT
MLB: Minnesota Twins - The Twins snapped a four-game losing skid against the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday but have just two wins in their last seven outings. Minnesota hits the road for a three-game set in Pittsburgh starting Tuesday.
WNBA: Los Angeles Sparks - The Sparks have lost back-to-back road tilts heading into Monday’s home game with the Washington Mystics. Los Angeles, which opened the year 7-1 SU, is 6-4 ATS including a 2-2 ATS mark as hosts.
Key Stat
61 – Since 1999, pitchers coming off perfect games/no-hitters have played over the total in their following start 61 percent of the time (19-11-1 over/under). San Francisco starter Matt Cain faces the Angels after pitching the 22nd perfect game in MLB history Wednesday.
Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked
Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado Rockies – Gonzalez was scratched from Sunday’s lineup due to a nagging hamstring injury. He’s listed as day-to-day. Gonzalez leads the Rockies in just about every offensive category, including average (.335) and home runs (17). Colorado travels to Philadelphia for a three-game set starting Tuesday.
Game of the Day
Croatia (+700) vs. Spain (-138 - Draw +188)
Notable Quotable
"I have in mind some players for Ireland's future, but you won't see them until August. If I were to change five or six men now for the match with Italy, I would draw suspicion. I've got to use the squad that brought Ireland back to the Euros after 24 years. They deserve to play." -- Former Italian head coach and current Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni, dispelling rumors that he would play some bench players against Italy Monday.
Notes and Tips
-- The Cincinnati Reds are just getting over a stomach virus that made its way through the clubhouse this week. More than half a dozen players were ill, including starter Mike Leake which forced the Reds to shuffle the rotation. Cincinnati travels to Cleveland for a three-game state rivalry starting Tuesdsay.
-- There are rumors that Spain and Croatia have a pact to finish their Group C finale in a 2-2 draw in order to eliminate Italy from the tournament. Both sides have denied any such arrangement. The Azzurri are fighting for a spot in the knockout phase in the late game Monday.
-- Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton has been released from hospital and is expected to return to the lineup Monday after being admitted with an intestinal virus Friday. “Hopefully he’ll be ready to go when we get to San Diego,” Rangers manager Ron Washington told reporters.

Who will be in the NBA Finals? Will it be the Westbrook and Durant tandem facing the New Big Three in the Heat? Will it be an old rivalry of Kobe and the Lake Show vs. Rondo and the Old Big Three Celtics? Or could it be someone completely new and different like the Clippers vs. the Indiana Pacers? All ATB knows is that we want you to be involved and ready to win some money buying squares to Game 4 of the NBA Finals. The cost for each square is 200 points. Four different prizes are up for grabs:
The Prizes are:
1st Quarter winner: 1000 ATB Points
3rd Quarter winner: 1000 ATB Points
Halftime winner: 2000 ATB Points
Final Score winner $500 Cash
If a poster wins ATB points they will be transferred to him/her within twenty-four hours of the game. The poster who picks the final score can claim his/her prize by emailing the contestguru18@gmail.com. Posters are allowed up to four squares each.
Each square you buy will result in 200 points being deducted from your grand total.
To play:
Simply select a square or squares not already taken by clicking on it in the Contest Pool. A Pop-Up box will ask you if you want to spend 100 points for the square you clicked on. You can click on YES in which case you will get the square as your avatar will fill in the square. After shuffling them, a person draws them one at a time until all of them are used as they are selected across the top of the columns and repeats the process on the left (facing the dealer) side of the sheet. We will have witnesses during the drawing to ensure that no foul play is involved and everyone has an equal chance to get any number. Atlanta/ NY Yanks Under 9: Gonna look to the Under in this. The Braves offense has been horrid of late as they have averaged just 1.7 rpg in their last 6 games and they have been been shutout in 3 of those games, including their last 2. Now they get to take on a Yankees staff that has a 1.97 ERA in June, with teams hitting just .224 off of them during the month. CC Sabathia gets the Ball for the Yanks tonight and he has been tough at home this year, with a 2.45 ERA and he hasn't allowed more than 3 ER's in any of his 5 home starts this year. if CC has any trouble at all then a Yanks pen that has a 1.93 ERA in its last 10 games will take over. This Atlanta, that scored just 6 runs in their three games with the Yanks last week, will not break out tonight. Mike Minor has had a tough year, but he comes in allowing just 2 total ER's in his last 2 starts, including allowing just 1 ER in 7.1 innings to the Yanks in last week's meeting. The Yanks offense has been solid this year as always, but coming off a trip they may be a bit sluggish here, and will probably need to put up at least 7 runs for this one to go over as the Braves will be good for no more than 3. I look for abot 7 runs in this one.

NY Mets/ Baltimore Under 7: The Mets offense comes in struggling a bit as they have put up just 5 runs in their last 3 games and now they must take on a Baltimore team that has thrown 2 shutouts in a row. Scoring problems is nothing new for the Mets at home as they average just 3.85 rpg at Citi Field, compared to 5 rpg on the road. The O's come in hitting just .231 vs righties on the road and theyu score just 3.7 rp/9 off off them away from home. Jake Arrieta gets the ball for the O's tonight and he has struggled with a 5.89 ERA overall, but slightly better on the road with a 4.63 ERA, but he is facing a struggling Mets offense so he should have a good showing tonight, plus if he does get in trouble then he will turn the ball over to an O's pen 1.61 ERA on the road. The Mets will counter with the hottest pitcher in baseball, R.A. Dickey. R.A Comes in not haiving allowed an ER in his last 4 starts, which spans 32.67 innings of work. In his last 5 starts he has a 0.22 ERA and has 50 K's to just 3 walks over that span. At home he has a 1.45 ERA and those home starts have averaged just 6 rpg. Neither team will score a lot of runs in this one.
LA Angels/ San Francisco Over 7: Matt Cain has been awesome with an 0.38 ERA in his last 3 starts, but a closer look shows that two of those starts were at home, and the other one was in San Diego. On the road this year Matt has a 3.23 ERA, with his road starts averaging 9.5 rpg and that's thanks mainly to the fact that the Giants score better on the road (4.72 rpg) than at home (3.31 rpg) The Giants hit .274 on the road and they have averaged 5 rpg in Cain's 5 road starts. Jerome Williams was having a nice year, but he but he has allowed 10 ER's in his last 2 starts and could have problems with the Giants offense that is hitting .285 and scoring 4.4 rpg in their last 5 games. Jerome does have a 2.93 ERA at home, but his mates have averaged 5.2 rpg for him at home, thus his home starts have averaged 8.2 rpg. The Angels have had problems scoring of late, but they still average 3.8 rpg at home and should be good for at least 3 here, while the Giants will also put at least 3 on the board as well and that will at worst give us a push.
